German Film Awards 2021: Four Lolas Awarded to MDM-Funded Films
"Fabian" by Dominik Graf was among the big winners at the 71st German Film Awards in Berlin. The drama snatched up not only the silver Lola (second place) in the Best Fiction Film category, but also the awards for Best Cinematography and Best Editing. Lorna Ishema won the gold Lola in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in "Precious Ivie".

Today, the German Film Academy announced the nominees for the German Film Awards 2021. Among the finalists are the MDM-supported films "Fabian oder Der Gang vor die Hunde", "Space Dogs" and "Ivie wie Ivie". They were nominated for a total of 13 Lolas.

Three awards for "Great Freedom" in Sarajevo
The MDM-funded romantic drama "Great Freedom" by Sebastian Meise won three awards at the 27th Sarajevo Film Festival yesterday evening. In addition to the main prize for best feature film, the German-Austrian co-production also won the trophy for best actor (Georg Friedrich) and the CICAE Award, which is presented by the European Arthouse Cinema Association.

Cannes Film Festival Featuring MDM-Funded Films "Invisible Demons" and "Magnetic Beats" and VR-Project "Biolum"
At the 74th edition of the in Cannes International Film Festival two MDM-funded productions will have their world premiere: "Invisible Demons" by Rahul Jain, featured in the Cinema for the Climate special sidebar and "Magnetic Beats" by Vincent Cardona in the Directors’ Fortnight, a section separate from the Selection. The VR narrative experience "Biolum" by Abel Kohen has been selected for the Cannes XR section.

At the 74th edition of the Cannes International Film Festival, three films realized with funding from Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung will have their world premiere in the official Selection. In the Competition, Mia Hansen-Løve’s film "Bergman Island" competes for the Golden Palm. In the Un Certain Regard section, "Great Freedom" by Sebastian Meise is having its premiere, while "Evolution" by Kornél Mundruczó has been invited to the newly established section Cannes Premiere.

The German camera operator Jürgen Jürges was awarded the Silver Bear for an "outstanding artistic contribution" to the MDM-funded drama "DAU. Natasha" by Ilya Khrzhanovskiy and Jekaterina Oertel. In the Panorama section, the drama "Father" ("Otac") by Serbian director Srdan Golubovic picked up both the audience award and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury.

Awards Brought Home by MDM-Funded Films in the Cannes Competition
Presided over by Alejandro González Iñárritu, the jury of the 72nd edition of the Cannes Film Festival handed out the coveted "palmtree" awards last Saturday night. After its previous recognition by the critics’ association through the FIPRESCI award, the unusual comedy "It Must Be Heaven" by Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman received a special mention from the jury at the awards ceremony. The award of the ecumenical jury went to the equally MDM-funded drama "A Hidden Life" by director Terrence Malick.

German Film Prize 2019: Seven Awards Go to MDM-Backed Productions
The drama "Gundermann" by Andreas Dresen was the star of last night’s 69th edition of the German Film Prize, held in Berlin. This unique musician’s portrait, backed by MDM with 600,000 euros, scooped up not only the Golden Lola for best feature film, but also the awards for best directing, best screenplay, best male lead actor, best set design, and best costume design. In addition, the political thriller "Blame Gam by Philipp Leinemann, funded with 250,000 euros, won the Lola for best male supporting actor (Alexander Fehling).

MDM-Funded Short Film “Umbra“ Snatches Golden Bear
For their MDM-funded short film "Umbra", Florian Fischer and Johannes Krell were awarded a Golden Bear by the International Short Film jury at the 69th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival. Thomas Heise’s documentary "Heimat is a Space in Time" grabbed the Caligari Prize. In addition, the children’s film "My Extraordinary Sumer with Tess" by Steven Wouterlood received an honorable mention by the Generation Kplus international jury.
